Matt’s Green House Page

This page is all about going green – having a smaller carbon footprint by recycling (water, trash, etc), using renewable energy, sustainable building methods, and all that stuff.

So, after recycling my plastics, paper, aluminum cans, turning off the lights, converting to CFL bulbs, setting my devices to use their EnergyStar settings, “unpluging” all my devices that aren’t being used, reducing the number computers being used by me through the use of virtualization, etc, I’m ready for the next level:

I’m going to build a greener house.

Some items I plan to implement to further green this project are:

Sustainable building methods:

  • Re-use of cargo shipping containers stop laughing, I’m serious as pre-fab building material
  • Electrical:

  • Voltaic Solar Panels on the roof
  • Horizontal wind turbines
  • Smart home control system to turn off devices not in use
  • Heating and cooling:

  • Thermal Solar Panels on the roof to supply radiant tube in-floor heating.
  • Use of Fiber Cement Siding on external walls
  • Use of SuperTherm ceramic for external wall insulation (r factor of 20)
  • Minimal use of windows on south facing walls. Otherwise, windows everywhere!
  • Water reclamation:

  • Rain water captured to water grass/garden
  • Grey-water recycling for Laundry/Toilets
  • Other:

  • Recycle as much of the building materials as possible
  • The house:

Un-clad of any exterior cosmetics, this is what it’ll look like from the front. This is how I would like the exterior to look. Depending on where I end up building it, it may need some type of exterior facade. My design will also be almost twice as deep – 40′x48′ for a total of 1920 sqft per floor or 3840 total sqft.

Here is how the exterior would look, clad in slate panels. This is just an idea.

    Here is the rear.

Here’s the left side. The side with the mechanicals.

    Here’s the right side.

Here’s the 1st floor layout. The middle is an open floorspace, with polished concrete floors and (faux) slate covered walls.

Here is the 2nd floor layout, minus the mechanicals:

Looks like someone else has beat me to the punch on this design. But I’m not mad! I’m actually encouraged. To me, this is real now.

Phase 1: Secure a suitable location

Lets face it, would you want something that looks like this right next to your home? Even my closest friends, while applauding my efforts to build green would have an issue with something so odd being built on their block. It just doesn’t gel well with suburbia. I don’t think I’d have a problem building this in an urban area, though. Its got an ultra urban look. That said, I’d prefer to stay out in the burbs.

    Phase 2: Prep site:

  • Grade land
  • Sewer connections
  • Water Connections
  • Lay foundation, concrete slabs for 2 bottom containers
  • Electrical Connection
  • Container watching on eBay:
